Bottom in the air….again!

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Thank you so much for all your tips and hints on the subject of spray basting. I can see I’m going to have to give it a whirl. Most people seem to swear by the spray for smallish items at least, but several have warned off trying to tackle large ones. I suppose at the end of the day that it’s going to be one of those things that comes down to a bit of practice.

Thanks also to Nicole, who raised the issue on her blog too – you can read her comments here and here.

So there’s nothing for it but to go on a mission to track down some basting spray. I can’t say I’ve ever seen any here, but then as I’ve never been looking for it, it could have been staring me in the face in the local quilt shops…..otherwise I’m sure I can get some in London when I’m over for the Fat Quarterly Retreat in June (yippeeeeee!)

In the meantime, there’s work to be done, so I’m back on my knees using the old tried and trusted method (needle and thread) to baste Hopscotch.  I have some very pretty Terrain yardage to back it with and I’m looking forward to getting quilting on this – it’s small enough that it should be done in the twinking of an eye….

….once I manage to decide how to quilt it, what colour thread to use …..blah…blah….

No seriously, do you think white thread would be too boring? I feel like I have too much white in the quilt to use anything else – colours would distract too much from everything else that’s going on.

So here I am, bottom in the air and a with project to keep me out of mischief this weekend!

Have a good one!

Helen

OK, so I’ll go out on a limb and suggest using the purple for the quilting, too?!!

That backing is also very pretty!

Lovely quilt, I’d go with the white thread. When I sandwich I use a big wooden board which I put on top of my ironing board – I start in the middle and then move things to work on either end – works for me.

I would go with white – my long arm quilter always talks me into bonkers colours and whilst they do work for an all-colour quilt, I feel that it sometimes confuses the eye when a quilt has a lot of white or cream in it (which mine almost always do!). Don’t envy you with the basting – I can feel my back and knees aching just thinking about it!

Happy basting! I’d go white or purple for the quilting 🙂

I think I would perhaps use a medium lavender thread. If you go white, half of the quilting won’t show at all on the stars. (I am assuming you are doing stitch-in-the-ditch quilting.) If you go lavender, it will show on both the white and purple. Lavender will also blend in well with the fabrics on the strips. Just something else to consider. It is an absolutely gorgeous quilt!

I spray basted with my bottom in the air yesterday and today my back is so sore. No matter how you baste a quilt, it is back-breaking work.
I would use white thread, I think, but I am not the best on color picking.
