A door I probably shouldn’t have opened

Monday, June 18th, 2012

This morning I had settled down to make some more triangles while listening to the end of the Today programme on Radio 4. Picture the scene…quietly minding my own business, nice cup of coffee at my elbow…you get the picture.

When I turned round to take something out of my fabric cupboard I was deluged….or well, avalanched really. I guess all that stuffing stuff into nooks and crannies finally reached the point of no return and out it came. Not all of it mind you, but a fair bit.

Hmm. Pause for reassessment.

So I added tidying the fabric cupboard to my list of things to do today that never ever actually gets done.

After a couple of hours I’d got thoroughly sick of climbing over it all and had the urge to purr over the lovely fat quarter bundles and sort things into nice colour-coordinated piles, so I pulled everything out. Gulp.

Putting it back in again proved to be a bit tricky.

Once I got to this stage I thought it was lovely and I’d like to keep it just like this…

But then there was all this lot still all over the floor….

And now I’ve discovered that there is no way in **** that I can get it all back in again – I’ve got a big bundle of apricot toweling and about 20 yards of muslin backing fabric that has now started a new life under my chair.

And I have an admission to make…

Something I’m a little ashamed of.

I’ve known there was a bit of an issue for a while, but have to now really bite the bullet and admit ….

ssshhh….I am a fabricaholic….I am a fabricaholic…..I AM A FABRICAHOLIC…

Despite my pledge not to buy any more, somehow since January I have acquired 48 metres more fabric than I’ve used up. Which is awful really. No willpower. No willpower whatsoever.

Things have to improve.

Watch out for some amazing feats of fabric usage coming up…

Hahaha…

Oh well….c’est la vie!

Hahahaha I know your pain! I have only a very small chest of drawers in which to store my fabric. Fine really, except I have a box of leftovers, piles of batting & a drawer full of tools to find a home for before I have a student come to stay on Sunday :/
I really don’t have a LOT of fabric here but I am starting to think I need a garden shed LOL
Brioni gave me the leftover uglies from FQR which I intend to use into 2 charity quilts. I even ended up with your sunbonnet Sue fabric!! LOL
    Good luck with the storage.
    Love Lush x

Yup, I think you’re a fabricoholic too, but what harm, and what a neat and tidy one too! I haven’t seen a cupboard that neat and tidy at my house for years, and probably never will. My poor neglected fabrics are stuffed into a couple of large plastic bags which in turn are stuffed in the attic. Oh to be as organised as you are!

Welcome to the club! There’s no cure, I hope you are aware of that fact. Your fabric stash looks amazing and I’m sure you came across fabrics you didn’t even remember you had. That’s the positive side of a major clean up!

  4. Kathy E. Says:

How wonderful your organized stash looks! Please send some organizing “want-to” my way… my fabric cabinet is in terrible need of some attention (along with lots of other places in my home).

I understand exactly where you are. . . oh boy, do I understand!!

Yesterday saw me on a mad tear going through stuff in the upstairs rooms. . .now that there is more room to move I can tackle the filing that I leave till tax time (I really hate to file but if I would do a little at a time I’m sure it wouldn’t be much of a chore).

I don’t know if I would be brave enough to show what the basement looks like at this point. . . . perhaps once I’ve had a chance to go through and clear it all up?

    Enjoy the tidiness!

I would need a week to sort mine. I know….it is a matter of urgency at the moment, but mine is 3 deep and ceiling high and I lose the will to live when I look at it. The next rainy day. Maybe.

I’m kind of thinking that’s actually a depot not a cupboard!

  8. Katy Says:

48 METRES?!!! Holy crap, that’s probably more than my entire stash! I’m sure we could all help you out some ;)

  9. Julie Says:

I’m a bookaholic, Helen. I understand and empathize. Ssshhh….don’t tell anyone my secret either.

  10. Susan Says:

I’m coming over to play in your cupboard! I would love to have your problem.

  11. Gertie Says:

This is impressive! I think a lot of us share your addiction. Can you get Mr H to build you another rug frame – that used up oodles as I remember!

  12. Fleur Cotton Says:

    Oh Helen…..I haven’t stop chuckling yet….what a funny situation!

Can’t wait to see what you do with all that excess fabric……

    Fleur xx

Helen, you’re making a lot of us fabricaholics (and yarnaholics too) feel a whole lot better knowing we’re not alone!

    Shelley ;)

Your cupboard looks beautiful!! And then I saw all the fabric on the floor, and I wasn’t shocked, or disgusted or worried for you. My thoughts were “how lucky is she”! All that fabric. I think I have a few more years of collecting to catch up to you, guessing by the age of your kids. Perhaps you have an excuse to go shopping, for another storage unit!

  15. Danny Says:

Haha! Awe. Your cupboard is brilliant! But 48 meters?! Holy cow, that’s a lot!! I’m not on a fabric diet, but I think being on a budget helps with the whole fabric buying thing. :)

  16. Alisa Says:

My floor looks like that, too! I tell myself it’s just because I’m keeping aside the fabric that’s reserved for certain projects, but I think we all know what that really means: I don’t have enough space on my shelves for all the fabric I have. *facepalm *

Clearly, this means you need to spend more time quilting, right? The universe is asking you to make more gorgeous quilts.
