Still playing with pinwheels

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

I’m still tootling along making pinwheels. There hasn’t been much time this week. Real life (and work!) has a habit of getting in the way and I seem to be spending a lot of time on homework assistance as the kids are coming up to school report time, so there are a lot of tests on the horizon – many of which seem to be pretty critical.

Sometimes the Swiss school system drives me crazy. The quality is very high – we did great in the recent world league tables, but the level of pressure put on the kids sometimes strikes me as way over the top. Which teenager doesn’t go through the odd phase in their school career where, for whatever reason (mostly hormones), their grades drop? Is it really necessary to pile on added pressure and threaten them with being kicked out of school? And these are the clever kids I’m talking about, not the lazy reprobate ones. I guess we have to bumble our way along and live with it, but sometimes I really think its completely over the top. Kids lose the love of learning for learning’s sake. And IMHO it’s no wonder our suicide rates are so high.

OK. Got that off my chest. Sorry for ranting….

I’m maintaining my sanity by gently piecing pinwheels and starting to play with their placement. Right now I’m just putting together 1/4 pinwheels and then once they’re all done, then I’ll start tweaking the placement and tackling the tricky piecing to get perfect centres. I still have no feel for how many I’ll manage with the fabric I’ve got – although I’m guessing 20 for a single bed sized quilt might be a bit over-optimistic.  Right now I’m just going with the flow…..

I can’t have stress in this area of my life too!

    Oh my, it’s looking beautiful.

School pressure is tricky, it seems to work well for some children but definitely not for others. Last year was very stressful for us with Year 6 SATS, it seemed ridiculous for a ten year old to actually losing sleep over some exams that really meant more for the school than him. A crazy world.

I’m loving the pinwheels. One of my favorite color combos, blue and yellow.
